Nail ideas by shape
Shape is the outline of the free edge of the nail, and it changes how a design reads more than most people expect. A thin French tip looks crisp on a square nail and soft on an oval one. A tiny accent dot has room to breathe on a long almond and can feel crowded on a very short round nail.
Start with what your hands do all day. If you type, lift, cook or play sport, rounder and shorter outlines (round, oval, squoval) are the easiest to live with because there are no sharp corners to catch. Almond and coffin add taper, which elongates the fingers but needs more length, so ask your nail tech what is possible with your natural nails before you commit.
Look at your nail bed too. A narrow nail bed often suits a straighter edge, while a wide one can look longer with a gentle taper. The posts below are grouped by the shape they were designed on, so you can compare how the same idea behaves on different outlines, then bring the one you like to your appointment.
